Pip kept seeds in a tin with a fitted lid. He set the open tin on the potting bench. When Pip came back, the lid was missing. The tin had not moved.

Pip found a thin curved line below the bench. The line dipped through the soft dirt. It wound past a brick and ended at a fig pot. A silver rim stuck out beside the pot.

The missing lid leaned against it. A brisk wind had hit the upright lid. The round lid rolled off the bench. Its rim pressed the thin line into the dirt.

The fig pot stopped it from rolling farther. Pip put the lid back and clipped it shut.

Use evidence, not guesses

Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
