The Lost Pond Clock

Read one sentence at a time, then reread for smooth phrasing.

A small waterproof clock hung on the pond dock. It helped the team record when frogs came to the log. One morning, only the hook remained. Dot found a round mark in the moss below the clock.

A line of pressed moss led toward the pond edge. There, a broad leaf floated with a dark object on top. The object was not the clock; it was a wet block of bark. Dot watched the current carry the leaf toward the far dock.

Behind it came a second leaf holding the lost clock. A night storm had knocked both objects from the dock. The wide leaves trapped them before they sank. A slow pond current carried them along the same route.

Dot lifted the clock with a net and dried its strap. The team fixed a closed hook above the water line.

For adults

Use evidence, not guesses

Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
