The Orange Spot Mystery

Read one sentence at a time, then reread for smooth phrasing.

An orange spot appeared on a pale rock beside the pond. Dot wiped it with a damp cloth, and the mark vanished. The next afternoon, the same bright spot returned. It was dry, had no smell, and left nothing on the cloth.

Dot looked for orange flowers above the rock but found none. She noticed that the spot appeared when the sun crossed the tool shed window. Inside the window hung an amber water bottle. Sunlight passed through the bottle and struck a round mirror.

The mirror sent an orange reflection onto the rock. Dot covered the bottle with a box for one minute. The orange spot vanished even though the sun still shone. She uncovered it, and the spot returned.

The team moved the bottle away from the hot window. The rock kept its natural color after that.

For adults

Use evidence, not guesses

Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
