The Bent Fence Clue
Natural read-along narration · AmeliaPress Read with Amelia, or choose a sentence to begin.
A short fence kept pets out of the lettuce bed. One section bent inward each wet morning. Meg reset it, but the fence bent again. The ground held no paw prints.
One peg was firm and the next peg was loose. Meg found a thin stem wedged under the loose peg. The stem led to a thick vine beside the shed. At night, drops collected on the broad vine leaves.
The wet vine sagged and pressed the stem. The stem worked like a lever under the peg. It lifted one side as the heavy vine bent the fence. Meg trimmed the dead stem and tied up the vine.
The next wet morning, the fence remained straight. No pet had entered the bed.

For adults
Use evidence, not guesses
Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
