Pam kept smooth glass jars on a low craft stand. One jar held tan buttons for garden tags. Before class, that jar was missing. A round mark remained in a patch of dust.

From the mark, two faint tracks crossed the stand. They continued as pressed lines in the grass below. The lines bent around a flat rock and ended by the rain barrel. Pam found the jar there, resting safely against a sand bag.

Two long plant ties were still wrapped around its rim. A student had set the ties across the stand the day before. When the ties sprang back, they caught the light jar. The jar rolled along them like a cart on twin tracks.

It dropped into the grass and followed the slight slant toward the barrel. The sand bag stopped it before it could hit the wall. Pam moved the loose ties and returned the uncracked jar to the stand.

Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
