Short U word family
-ush Words
/ʌʃ/ — words that share the -ush pattern
The regular -ush family combines short U with the digraph sh, which represents the single sound /ʃ/.
How the -ush family works
Keep the ending -ush together, then add or change the beginning sound. Read through the whole word from left to right instead of guessing from its first letter.

Spelling and pronunciation

Push and bush are important exceptions: in most accents they use /ʊ/, not short U /ʌ/. Teach them separately instead of placing them in the regular -ush group.
Five-minute routine
Practise without memorizing the list
Cover the list and reveal one word at a time. Say each sound, blend, then reread the word normally.
Build rush, then exchange its first sound to make another real word from this page.
Read one sentence, dictate one target word, and ask the learner to explain which letters spell the shared ending.
