Vowel Team (oa/ow) word family

-ow Words

/oสŠ/ โ€” words that share the -ow pattern

Oa and ow spell the same long-o sound, /oสŠ/, following the same positional pattern as ai/ay: oa is used in the middle of a word, such as boat and road, while ow is used at the end of a word, such as snow and grow.

How the -ow family works

Keep the ending -ow together, then add or change the beginning sound. Read through the whole word from left to right instead of guessing from its first letter.

1Read the ending-ow /oสŠ/
2Add the beginningsn + -ow

Spelling and pronunciation

Keep this family accurate

Keep ow as one vowel-team chunk, /oสŠ/, the same sound heard in the middle of boat and road. Be careful: the same letters ow can also spell a completely different sound, the one heard in cow and how. That pattern is taught separately.

Compare with oa (middle) vs ow (end)boat, road, coat use oa in the middle ยท snow, grow, show use ow at the end
