Long O word family

-one Words

/oʊn/ — words that share the -one pattern

The -one family gives learners some of the most common long-o CVCe words, including bone, cone, and phone, which appear often in both spoken and written beginner English.

How the -one family works

Keep the ending -one together, then add or change the beginning sound. Read through the whole word from left to right instead of guessing from its first letter.

1Read the ending-one /oʊn/
2Add the beginningb + -one

Compare with short O (add silent e)con / cone — one of the few clean short-to-long pairs in this family

Five-minute routine

Practise without memorizing the list

Blend three words

Cover the list and reveal one word at a time. Say each sound, blend, then reread the word normally.

Change the beginning

Build bone, then exchange its first sound to make another real word from this page.

Read and write

Read one sentence, dictate one target word, and ask the learner to explain which letters spell the shared ending.
