The Silver Pin Trail

Read one sentence at a time, then reread for smooth phrasing.

Pip used a silver pin to fix a list to the shed wall. When the list fell, the pin was missing. Pip did not reach into the grass at once. He used a stick to check the spot safely.

A tiny glint flashed near a brick. A second glint appeared beside the bin. Pip first thought there were two pins. Then a thin strip of foil flipped in the wind.

The foil reflected sunlight from one place to the next. Pip followed its direction rather than each false flash. Behind the bin, the real pin clung to a small magnet. The magnet had fallen from the back of the list clip.

It pulled the pin along when the clip slid from the wall. Pip put both pieces in a lidded tin.

For adults

Use evidence, not guesses

Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
