Meg found a red feather on the garden step. It was not one of her cream feathers. A second red feather rested by the shed. Meg and Sam went from the step to the shed.

Behind the shed, they found a small nest with no bird in it. A red thread hung from the edge. Sam inspected the thread. It came from a felt flag above the shed.

The wind had bent the flag and sent bits of red felt across the garden. From far away, each soft bit had looked like a feather. Meg fixed the flag with a peg and thread. No bird had lost a feather after all.

Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
