Alphabet & Beginning Sounds

Meet the letters. Discover their sounds.

Explore 26 uppercase and lowercase letter cards, picture words, an alphabet poster, and hands-on sound matching activities for home and classroom learning.

Start with a few letters

Choose 2-4 letters. Introduce the picture names, say each word, and listen for its beginning sound. Match the pictures to lowercase letters, then connect the uppercase forms. Letter names and sounds are different: the name of B is “bee”; its sound is /b/.

Our vowel pictures introduce short sounds. C uses /k/ in cat, and G uses /g/ in gum. C and K share /k/, so introduce them separately in sound-only sorts. Q works with u in queen to represent /k/ + /w/. X is the exception: fox has /k/ + /s/ at the end, so leave X out of beginning-sound sorting. Use a consistent accent for short o.
