Consonant + LE word family
-tle Words
/tษl/ โ words that share the -tle pattern
The -tle ending is a final stable syllable, /tษl/, as in little and bottle. It is extremely common, since little is one of the most frequent words in early reading.
How the -tle family works
Keep the ending -tle together, then add or change the beginning sound. Read through the whole word from left to right instead of guessing from its first letter.

Why this -tle pattern is useful
Use little as the anchor word
Little is one of the most frequent words in beginning reading, which makes it a strong, memorable anchor for the whole consonant + le pattern, not only -tle.
Teach the count-back-three trick
For any word ending in consonant + le, counting back three letters from the end finds the final syllable: lit-tle, bat-tle, bot-tle.
Explain why the e is silent
The e never says a sound here. Its job is to show that le forms its own syllable, /tษl/, rather than being read as a separate long-e sound.
Connect it to the six other -Cle families
Once the pattern is clear with -tle, the same count-back-three trick works for -ble, -dle, -gle, -kle, and -ple.

Read -tle words in sentences
1A little turtle sat by the castle.
2Fill the bottle.
3Be gentle.
4The baby shook the rattle.
5They will settle here.
Ask the learner to underline the -tle word, decode it, and then reread the complete sentence naturally.
Spelling and pronunciation
Keep this family accurate
Count back three letters from the end: tle. Lit-tle and bat-tle both split right before that final chunk.
A common question
What is a final stable syllable?
When a word ends in a consonant followed by le, such as little, table, or apple, that ending forms its own syllable, with a silent e and a schwa sound, /ษl/. Counting back three letters from the end of the word finds this syllable every time: lit-tle, ta-ble, ap-ple.
Five-minute routine
Practise without memorizing the list
Cover the list and reveal one word at a time. Say each sound, blend, then reread the word normally.
Build little, then exchange its first sound to make another real word from this page.
Read one sentence, dictate one target word, and ask the learner to explain which letters spell the shared ending.
