Vowel Team (ee) word family

-ee Words

/iː/ — words that share the -ee pattern

The ee vowel team is one of the most common and most reliable long-e spellings. See, bee, and tree are among the first vowel-team words most beginning readers meet.

How the -ee family works

Keep the ending -ee together, then add or change the beginning sound. Read through the whole word from left to right instead of guessing from its first letter.

1Read the ending-ee /iː/
2Add the beginnings + -ee

Spelling and pronunciation

Keep this family accurate

Keep ee as one vowel-team chunk, /iː/. Unlike ai/ay, ee is common both in the middle of a word (sleep, green) and at the end (see, tree).

Compare with ee vs ea (same sound)see and sea both say /iː/, but only ea has a common short-e exception, as in head

Five-minute routine

Practise without memorizing the list

Blend three words

Cover the list and reveal one word at a time. Say each sound, blend, then reread the word normally.

Change the beginning

Build see, then exchange its first sound to make another real word from this page.

Read and write

Read one sentence, dictate one target word, and ask the learner to explain which letters spell the shared ending.
