R-Controlled Vowels
Bossy r: ar, er, ir, or, and ur
When a vowel is followed by r, the r "bosses" the vowel and changes its sound completely — it no longer says its short or long sound. Teachers often call this the bossy r rule, and it covers some of the most common spelling patterns in English.
What does a bossy r do?
In car, her, bird, for, and fur, the vowel does not keep its usual short or long sound. Instead, the vowel and the r blend into one new r-colored sound. There are three distinct bossy-r sounds to learn: /ɑr/ as in car, /ɔr/ as in for, and /ɜr/ as in her, bird, and fur — three spellings, one sound.
Three bossy-r sounds
ar, or, and er/ir/ur are not the same
Learners sometimes treat every r-controlled vowel as one sound. Keeping the three sounds separate from the start prevents confusion later.
car, bar, dark, start — one clear sound, one clear spelling.
for, fork, corn, sort — a different sound from ar, even though both use r.
her, stir, fur — the exact same sound spelled three different ways.
Because er, ir, and ur sound identical, the correct spelling for any one word has to be learned by sight, not sounded out.
A simple teaching sequence
How to introduce bossy r
Teach one bossy-r sound fully — start words, then a few final-consonant endings — before introducing the next one. Mixing all three too early makes the spelling choice harder, not easier.
AR — /ɑr/
AR — /ɑr/ words
The r takes over completely: a no longer says its short or long sound, only the r-colored /ɑr/ heard in car.
OR — /ɔr/
OR — /ɔr/ words
A second, different bossy-r sound: not a variation of ar, but its own vowel + r pattern, as in for.
ER, IR, UR — /ɜr/
ER, IR, UR — /ɜr/ words
Three different spellings for the exact same sound. There is no way to hear which one a word uses; it has to be learned by sight.

After bossy r: Vowel Teams
Once ar, or, and er/ir/ur feel secure, the next step is learning vowel teams: two vowels working together to spell one sound, as in rain, boat, and light.
