The Knock at the Potting Shed

Read one sentence at a time, then reread for smooth phrasing.

A soft knock came from the potting shed every few minutes. Dot checked the door, but no one stood there. The knock happened only when the water tap was on. Inside, a hose ran past a stack of pots.

One loose loop rested against a hollow box. When water rushed through the hose, the loop grew stiff. It lifted from the floor and tapped the box. The box made the small tap sound like a firm knock.

Dot placed a folded cloth between the hose and box. The next rush of water made no sound. She clipped the hose to the wall and moved the box. The pots remained still through the test.

Dot marked the time of one final tap cycle. The regular knock was explained without opening any locked door.

For adults

Use evidence, not guesses

Ask the learner to point to the sentence that proves each answer. If decoding is effortful, reread one paragraph at a time. A fluent second reading is more valuable than rushing to the next story.
