A tan plant tag stood in the herb patch. Each day, the tag named the plant beside it. After a fast rain, the tag had vanished. Sam found a narrow gap in the damp sand.

The gap had the same flat shape as the tag. A set of small splash marks ran toward the path. Sam followed them past a black planter. Behind the planter, a drain had filled with sand.

Rainwater had backed up across the patch. The shallow stream lifted the flat tag from its gap. It carried the tag until the planter blocked it. Sam found the tag pressed against the back rim.

He cleared the drain and set the tag on a taller stand. The next rain left both the patch and tag in place.
